Those Old Eyes

His eyes

Glisten

In the light of the sun

Gleaming

Through the glass

Of the window

He occupies

By himself

Alone

His gaze

Lost

Far off

In the distant expanse

Of the light blue sky

Sadness

Etched upon his face

Sorrow

Carved

Deeply into his wrinkles

His veins pulse

His fingers shake

Frustration from

Unchosen

Silence

A prisoner

Trapped

Within his mind

An inescapable cell

Filled

With constant

Memories

Of the man

He used to be

Relentless

Reminders

Of what no longer is

Within the depths of those

Blue eyes

Drowning

Are stories

The history

Of a life

Wasting away

So many tales

Left to tell

Words

Precious

Words

Linger

Until the day he takes that final

Fading

Breath

And are forever

Lost

forbidden isle

here in the middle of life’s journey

long since having departed the safe harbor

of youth and youthful decisions

sailing deep into uncharted seas

i find myself willingly moored

in the warm waters

of a forbidden isle

i should weigh anchor

and run with the wind

fleeing these sandy shores

but i don’t

i am hopelessly lost

in your gentle terrain

in the soft breeze of your breath

and in the deep emerald waters

of your eyes
